Due to Canada's size the emergence of a national economy has depended on the development of an efficient system of transportation. The Trans-Canada Highway and two trans-continental rail systems are the focus of road and rail networks that reach into the far north. Air services are well-developed and expanding. However, easy access to the cheap water transportation of the Great LakesûSaint Lawrence Seaway system has helped Ontario and QuΘbec retain their dominance of the economy.
